About Font Lab

Font Lab lets you try heading and body fonts on real product screens before you commit to them.

Why it exists

Most font sites show a single sentence on a blank page. Real interfaces mix big headlines, tiny labels, long paragraphs, prices and buttons on the same screen. Font Lab puts your fonts there, so you judge them where they will actually live.

What you can do

  • Pair any two of 1,600+ fonts, or start from a ready-made pairing.
  • See them on a coffee app, a marketing page, a blog, a fintech app, a food delivery app and a SaaS dashboard, on phone and web at once.
  • Compare up to four pairings side by side, with the screens scrolling together.
  • Experiment with weight, size, letter spacing and line height, and read sizes in px, rem, em or %.
  • Save the pairings you like and copy the CSS for your developer.

Who it is for

Designers choosing type for an app or a website, and founders who want their product to feel considered. Made for designers, by a designer.

Privacy policy

At a glance

  • No accounts and no sign-up. Font Lab never asks for your name or email.
  • Font Lab records anonymous usage, meaning how the tool is used, only to improve it.
  • That data is never sold, rented or shared with any person or organisation.
  • Font Lab is a free, non-profit project, and it will stay that way.

What is recorded

When you use Font Lab, Microsoft Clarity records how the page is used: clicks, scrolls and mouse movement; which screens, fonts and settings you try; and which buttons you press, such as Compare or Copy for Figma. It also notes your device type, browser, screen size and rough location (country or city, worked out from your connection).

I use this to see where people get stuck and what they find useful, so I can make Font Lab better.

What is not recorded

Your name, email address, account details or files. Clarity hides anything typed into text boxes, such as the font search. There are no ads and no profiles built about you.

Not shared with anyone

The usage data is not sold, rented or given to any person or organisation. The only companies involved are the services that make Font Lab work, listed below, and they handle it only to provide those services. If this ever changes, this page will say so first.

Your choices

You can block cookies or tracking in your browser settings or with a privacy extension, and Font Lab will still work. Troubleshooting
Why your V60 tastes sour, and the one dial to turn first
Written by Maya Ortiz  ·  6 min read

Sour coffee is almost never a bad bean. It's water that left too soon, before it picked up the sweetness.

You followed the recipe, the timer said 2:45, and the cup still bites. Before you change anything, taste it again once it cools. Sourness that fades into sweetness is fine. Sourness that stays sharp all the way down is under-extraction.

Change only one thing

It's tempting to adjust grind, water temperature and pour speed at once. Then you can't tell which one helped. Pick the grind. It has the biggest effect and the easiest to repeat.

Go two clicks finer, brew again, and write down what changed.

On a hand grinder, two clicks is a small step. If the cup is still sharp, go two more. If it turns bitter or dry, you've gone too far, so step back one.

What to write down

  • The grind setting, in clicks
  • Total brew time
  • One word for how it tasted

Next up: why your AeroPress tastes flat, and how the steep time changes it.
